Truman Alumni Held Charity Game for Longtime Basketball Coach
by THS Media reporter Alana Campbell
On Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 Truman High School hosted a charity event for Steve Broughton a former Truman Boys Basketball Coach. The charity was designed to help him with his cancer treatment. Steve Broughton was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer. The event raised $10,000 at the door. Also, on Tuesday morning there was an anonymous donor that wrote a check for $500 dollars when he read the article in the Examiner.
“I am so happy to see that people actually care about those who have cancer and want to help in this event." Anthony Carlson said. "I have a feeling that everyone has a heart and really does care when people need help.”
Those in attendance at the charity game were inspired by all the people donating for a great and amazing cause because they would all like to see Coach Broughton fight this cancer.
“Coach should be proud that everyone was there supporting him. I was surprised to see that many people there tonight,” Truman alumna Stacey Carlson said. People actually do want to help people that have cancer like Broughton but they just don’t know how until someone throws an event like the basketball game.
At the charity event they planned a video and all of Broughton’s old players for the Truman basketball team of 1993-2004 had something really memorable that had to say about him. All the players mentioned Broughton’s stare look he would always give the boys. They always laughed when it came to that one stare.
The game was a success. Just a few old friendly faces coming to play for their old coach and remembering the good times they had in the Truman high school gym. The players showed they still had skills by displaying their pass throws and dunks.
“I was surprised to see that the old players still had it in them,” Truman almni Chris Carlson said.
The alumni returned to support a great cause and to get back with their coach again. This experience is proof that a lot of people are willing to help others in a difficult situation. Keep your head up and know that Steve Broughton Coach of the boys basketball team of 1993-2004 is going to fight this cancer.

THS Prepares for Homecoming '14 Spirit Week
By THS Media Reporter Gregory Miranda
Homecoming week is just around the corner and every year Truman has new ideas for the new week.
Starting of the week, the theme will be Marvel Monday. This is a chance to wear and represent your favorite Marvel superhero with notables such as Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more.
Wearing your favorite superhero’s logo would not be the only thing you could do to help out Truman during spirit week, you can come out and support both JV and Varsity Boys Soccer starting at 5 p.m. and Varsity kicking off at 6:30 p.m.
Next will be Thrift shop Tuesday. Giving us the opportunity to look as fashionable as you can with clothes from Thrift shop or something you have that’s classic and old.
“On Wednesday we wear pink,” said Amanda Seyfried, but you know here as Karen Smith one of the three originals from the popular school group The Plastics of the original “Mean Girls” film.
And we will take her advice as we should all continue to have spirit in our school and participate and yes, even if you’re a guy. If not, “YOU CAN'T SIT WITH US!”
To show more support you can head out to Henley Aquatic Center at 4 p.m. and support the boys swim team.
Thursday you won’t represent your favorite superhero, won’t wear pink and you’ll definitely not wear clothes from the 80’s with holes in them, you’ll be supporting your school with the theme of True Patriot Thursday.
But that’s not all, in focus, which will be at the end of the day, you’ll have the chance to show your true school spirit at the assembly.
Also the men's volleyball team will be in the men’s tournament for “Dig 4 a Difference” you can purchase a ticket at lunch which will cost you $2 and it will be $3 at the door.
To close out your school week we will show our pride by unveiling a Tie Dye theme. The theme for the Men’s football game which kicks off at 7 p.m. is Dark out the Night which you are encouraged to wear dark colored shirts such as black or navy.
Students of every grade level are encouraged to participate in spirit week as it helps to prepare for what will be a fun night at Homecoming which will take place Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
