PRIDE Initiative

You’ve probably heard this one before, there are some new changes in place this year at Truman High School. For the 2015-2016 school year the new staff members received a warm welcome, the new school renovations were acknowledged and the students complained about schedule changing but there is something that Pamela Boatright, head principal made very clear even on the first day back to school assembly is that Truman has “P.R.I.D.E.”
In almost every classroom, hallway and around every corner you'll see a P.R.I.D.E. rubric poster. On the first day teachers addressed their new students with this concept on how P.R.I.D.E. works. Long story short, the 'P' stands for Personal Responsibility 'R' is for respect, 'I' is for Integrity, 'D' is Dependability and 'E' means Excellence.
This acronym is used for staff to remind students how to behave and what is expected in the classroom, common area and how all students can show pride and respect for their school.

You might ask yourself, “Did THS have a pride issue?” But some believe there was and it happens everyday. It may sound silly but it has to do with lunch. During lunch periods once students hear the bell they switch on tunnel vision on whether it’s to make it to the next class, talk to friends or check phones to send a quick text or two but what's left behind is trash that students shamelessly leave behind to make the custodial staff work extra hard and the administrators found out to be a problem.
"To promote a positive actions and behavior," Boatright said. "As well as to reach a common language within our student body and staff."
For those who show exhibit Patriot Pride will be awarded with what is called a 'PAT on the back'. A PAT on the back is a card given by teachers to students who display pride in their school whether that be on task in class or picking up trash around school. Earn 10 PAT's and you get a free drink courtesy of the Truman concession and the prizes go up from there all the way to a potential day off school attending a field trip of your choice if you reach 100 PAT's.
There is always a good and bad side to a new set of rules and that is addressed in a P.R.I.D.E disciplinary poster stating how not to act and possible consequences.
Patriot Pride might not stick around as the concept is experimental and was implemented over the summer.
"Throughout the year we will collect data and evaluate whether it's effective or not make the necessary adjustments," Boatright said.
The PRIDE Rubric pushes for a unified student body to take pride in what they do and to respect the people and places around them and certainly a step in the right direction in efforts to enhance the learning and social environment here at Truman High-school.
