Gay Marriage Legalized
by THS Media Shawn Silver
On June 26 our deeply split congress voted five to four that the ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
After years and decades of litigation and activism, same-sex couples rejoiced all over the nation.
With such a divided nation, there was a variety of opinions thrown in the air.
“No longer may this liberty be denied,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy said. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”
While others were disgusted with the ruling.
“If you are among the many Americans — of whatever sexual orientation — who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision,” Chief Justice Roberts wrote. “Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”
As the last two months have progressed there have been many issues with this topic, from the denial of licenses to the threat of a preacher to set himself on fire. The most significant issue that has arose is that some individuals believe they should not be forced to perform same-sex marriages due to their Christian faith.
President Barack Obama stated, "This ruling is a victory for America. This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts: When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free."
Needless to say there has been a vast array of reactions to this topic. Alas same-sex couples still rejoice all across the nation.
